Roberts
painted this work in the summer of 1886 / 1887 in the vicinity of Keefers
boatshed and jetty and his figures are situated close to the site where
Frederick McCubbin
painted his work 'Moyes
Bay, Beaumaris'.
The cliffs in this
area were renowned for their fossils, and the artists in their later letters
would write of the fossil beach, when referring to this site.
Roberts view is towards
the cliffs at Mentone and beyond to the distant Dandenong Ranges.
