This work was exhibited in the Victorian Jubilee Exhibition, held in Melbourne in 1884, and was described in one instance as
'a very characteristic bit of bushlife…representing natives offering skins for sale to some bushmen.'

Its title has also been recently given as 'The Barwon River, Geelong'. It was presented by N. Belcher and W. Max Bell to the Geelong Art Gallery in 1923.
