Roberts painted this work in the summer of 1886 / 1887 in the vicinity of Keefers boatshed and jetty and his figures are situated close to the site where Frederick McCubbin painted his work 'Moyes Bay, Beaumaris'.

The cliffs in this area were renowned for their fossils, and the artists in their later letters would write of the fossil beach, when referring to this site.

Roberts view is towards the cliffs at Mentone and beyond to the distant Dandenong Ranges.
