Streeton has captured in this work the Yarra River below Eaglemont as it slowly meanders through the rich river flats. Beyond the river is the Bolin Bolin billabong and distant mountains.

The white vertical, close to the horizon line in the middle distance was the Beaconsfield Tower on Doncaster Hill.

Streeton painted this work in the vicinity of what is now the intersection of MacKennel Street and Streeton Crescent, East Ivanhoe. The inspiration for the title came from the sonnet ‘After-Thought’, 1820 by William Wordsworth.
