In this pen and ink work, Eugene von Guerard provides us with a view of the early township of Ballarat, from the lookout tower of the Western Fire Brigade. The Fire Brigade building was built in 1859, and today the building is home to the Ballarat City Fire Brigade.

Eugene von Guerard depicts for us the main road, which heads towards distant Mount Warrenheip. This is Sturt Street, with its tree-filled median strip. St. Andrews, without its spire, is hidden behind 'Crisp the Draper', to the centre of the work, and opposite, to the right is St. Patricks.

The work was commissioned for a wood-engraving supplement to the Ballarat Star in 1870.
